Questions people ask
- Can a CSV cell become an executable formula?
- Not in this workbook. A string that begins with =, + or @ (for example a DDE payload) is stored as a TEXT cell that shows the characters verbatim, so the workbook never contains a live formula. The workbench counts these cells as "kept as text".
- Why is everything text by default?
- Because typing is a guess, and guesses corrupt identifiers: 0042 becomes 42, UPC-12 codes and version strings get mangled. The default preserves every value exactly. Enable the numbers conversion when you specifically want plain decimals as numbers. It only converts canonical literals (-12.5, 6.25) that read back the same, never 007, 1e3 or +5.
- What about my header row?
- Detected or declared the same way every CSV tool in the family works (auto/yes/no). A header is written verbatim as row 1 and is never typed as data. Without a header, every row is data.
- What happens with ragged rows?
- The strict policy (default) refuses the conversion and one diagnostic names every disagreeing row (line, expected vs actual cells). Permissive keeps ragged rows as whole rows, preserving their content as-is.
- Are there limits?
- 8 MB of input, 16 MB workbook, 500,000 rows, 1,024 columns and 1,000,000 cells, plus Excel's own 32,767-character cell limit. Every limit refuses the run with a named diagnostic rather than silently truncating your table.
