Questions people ask
- Does this match Microsoft Word's word count exactly?
- No claim of parity is made. This is a documented census of the document BODY: direct paragraphs plus, with the include-tables option, every table cell's text (merged cells counted once). Word's own algorithm may treat text boxes, tracked changes or footnotes differently. This tool never counts those, and it says so in the report.
- What exactly is included and excluded?
- Included: body paragraphs, and table cell text when the option is on. Excluded: headers and footers, text boxes, footnotes and endnotes, comments, and runs inside tracked-change containers. Nothing is counted twice: table text is separate from body paragraphs and only merged into the totals when the option is on.
- How are words counted?
- Words are Unicode-whitespace tokens; characters are counted with and without whitespace over the same text. Unicode text is preserved character for character, and empty paragraphs count as paragraphs (zero words).
- What about an empty document?
- A textless document is a legitimate result: all counts are zero and the report notes it as empty rather than failing.
