File hash / checksum

Calculate the digests of one or more files, SHA-256 by default, with SHA-512, SHA-1 and MD5 optional, and download a standard checksums.txt.

SHA-256SHA-512MD5

Upload

Files (1–4)
Up to 4 files, 50 MB each. Any type; the bytes are only read, never opened.

Options

Hash algorithms
SHA-256 and SHA-512 are the modern choices. SHA-1 and MD5 are here only for checking against old systems; they are not safe for security use.
Questions people ask
Which hash should I use?
SHA-256 for almost everything. SHA-512 if the system you are checking against uses it. Only pick SHA-1 or MD5 when you are matching an old checksum; both are broken for security purposes and should not be trusted to prove a file is genuine.
What can I do with the checksums.txt file?
It is in the standard format, so "sha256sum -c checksums.txt" verifies the files in place. Handy for checking a download was not corrupted or tampered with.
Do you keep my files?
No. The bytes are streamed through the hasher and the upload is removed as soon as the job finishes. Your checksum report is available for about 10 minutes, then it is automatically deleted too.
How big a file can I hash?
Up to 50 MB per file, four files per job. The hasher streams in fixed chunks, so large files never have to fit in memory.
