Filename sanitiser
Rename files so their names are safe to store and share.
Working…
Questions people ask
- Does it change my file?
- No. Only the name changes. The bytes come back identical; this is a filename tool, not a converter.
- Will it mangle a normal filename?
- No. A name that is already safe and readable comes back exactly as it was, spaces, capitals and all: "My Holiday Photo 2026.JPG" stays "My Holiday Photo 2026.JPG". It only intervenes where a character genuinely needs fixing.
- What does it fix?
- Path tricks like ../../etc/passwd (which become just "passwd"), hidden control characters, the punctuation Windows forbids, reserved device names such as CON or NUL.txt, leading or trailing spaces and dots, and over-long names (kept readable, with the extension intact).
- What if two files end up with the same name?
- The clash is resolved deterministically: the first keeps its name, the next become "report (1).pdf", "report (2).pdf" and so on. No file is ever overwritten.
- Why would I use this?
- To make a pile of downloaded, emailed or scanned files safe to store, sync or hand to a tool that trusts its filenames, without losing the human-readable part that made them useful.
- What happens to my files?
- The originals are removed as soon as processing finishes; your renamed copies are available for about 10 minutes, then they are automatically deleted.
